At the excavations in Kerch found a two thousand year old statue

Archaeologists discovered during excavations of the ancient Mirmekysky settlement in Kerch a large marble statue about two thousand years old, which may indicate the existence of a large temple there.
Archaeologists discovered during excavations of the ancient Mirmekysky settlement in Kerch a large marble statue about two thousand years old, which may indicate the existence of a large temple there.
This was reported to TASS by Alexander Butyagin, head of the antique archeology department of the ancient world department of the State Hermitage Museum, who leads the expedition.
“The statue is a male torso in clothes, well preserved, 1.1 meters in size, its age is about two thousand years – it is either of the late Hellenistic [era], that is, BC, or the early Roman, that is, the beginning of our era. Most likely, a rather large temple existed here, including not just small statues, but rather large statues. We sometimes find architectural details – fragments, but nothing so large has been found so far, ”said Butyagin, adding that so far no remnants of the temple on the territory of the Mirmekia site have been found.
The scientist noted that it is still difficult to judge who the found statue depicts – the head and hands are missing from the find. At the same time, according to him, even the statue in the temple was not necessarily an image of a deity.
In addition to a large statue, archaeologists discovered a small statuette.

“This is a fragment of a deity sitting on a throne, but it is much smaller – 15-17 cm. And there are enough standard finds – fragments of tiles, bronze coins, remains of ceramic vessels – mostly of redak, Roman times,” said Alexander Butyagin.
According to the leader of the expedition, the statue found is the largest on the Mirmekiy site of ancient settlement, moreover, such finds are in general quite a rare phenomenon.
“Large statues are found no more than once in 10-15 years. About 10 years ago they found a slightly smaller female statue in Panticapaeum. Our find was done at the very end, we already cleaned the layer for fixation and preservation, so we were lucky, ”said the archaeologist.
The found statue, as well as other finds of museum value, will be transferred to the East-Crimean Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve. It can be seen in the exhibition, perhaps next year – after the research will be conducted and a scientific article published with a preliminary analysis of the discovery.

Since 1999, the Mirmekia archaeological expedition of the State Hermitage Museum has been working here.
