Burial Facility-3.

It is possible that someone has already heard about the excavations of this necropolis, read materials in the open spaces of the network, watched reports on TV. However, the quality of the presentation of information in the media about archaeological discoveries is not particularly high. Due to the specifics of their profession, journalists do not go deep into details (and sometimes due to simple incompetence, but this is not a generalization, please do not take journalists reading this opus into your account). In most cases, specialists simply simply have no time to explain to the public that yes how. After all, the more and more interesting you dig up – the thicker the report. Then you still have to report to the conferences. And then publish. In general, write without stopping.
All this is what I need. And the fact that the essence of the importance of a particular finding to the viewer / reader simply does not reach. Articles and monographs will not be seen later by most. And they see only beautiful or unusual things in isolation from the context. After thinking about it, I decided to try to make a post about the important things that are missing from the media focus. Long chose what to talk about. The choice fell, as the name implies, on the Frontovoye-3 burial ground discovered in the Crimea. Just in this case it will be easier for me, because these are the works of my institute, the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and I, in principle, are informed from the first lips of my friends and colleagues, that there’s a way. But enough to pull the cat for a causal place, let’s start.

General view of the territory of the necropolis Frontovoye-3 investigated at the beginning of August.
What do we see with you? Classic burial ground. I will explain that for the term. Underground burial archaeologists call burial, which is not done under the mound / stone structure / in rocky grottoes, etc. Those. Any modern cemetery is just a graveyard. However, as we can see on the photo above, the graves themselves are not arranged in the most usual way for modernity. Most of them are side burials, holes with shoulders, there are also a few catacombs (those burials, next to which there is a “tail”). For clarity, below is a picture with a schematic image in profile of these three variants of the burial structure.
Necropolis dates from II-IV centuries. AD and is the resting place for the population of the late Scythian archaeological culture. I deliberately do not call them just late Scythians, since I do not agree that this culture during this period is connected with the Scythians proper of the Northern Black Sea region (for reference, Scythia along with its population was erased from the historical map in the 3rd century BC by the Sarmatians who came from the east). A little about the relationship of these brave guys who lived in the foothill and mountainous parts of Crimea with their neighbors (and there are Sarmatians, the Kingdom of the Bosporus, and the omnipresent Romans) can be read in the press release of our institute .. We will not stop here now, for dive into the wilds wild and far.
And we will focus on what is not focused on in the press release, and said in one word in the media. But it is precisely this fact that makes the burial ground Frontovy-3 unique and special. He is not robbed. From the word at all. The only undisturbed necropolis of this time in the entire Northern Black Sea region. This is incredible luck and great happiness for archaeologists. And the essence is not so much that in the inventory of the finds there will be thousands of units of various amphoras, brooches (these are fasteners), buckles, jewelry, armaments. There is even a pair of glass balsamarias (bottles for storing incense, etc.).
